Detailed Itinerary: 6 days Rwanda & Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari

Pre-Departure & Travel Advice

Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Your guide meets you in Kigali. You take a relaxed city tour depending on your arrival time. Kigali offers museums, memorials, clean streets, and calm viewpoints that introduce you to Rwanda’s culture and history. You settle at your hotel and prepare for the safari.

Day 2: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

You leave Kigali after breakfast. The drive climbs through terraced hills and green countryside. The volcanic chain appears as you approach Musanze. You check in at your lodge near the park and enjoy the cool mountain air. The evening stays quiet so you can rest for the next day’s trek.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You arrive at the park headquarters for briefing. Rangers explain gorilla groups and trekking expectations. The trek begins on open farmland before entering bamboo forest. The air cools and the forest thickens as you climb.

When you reach the gorillas, the encounter feels peaceful and intimate. You watch the silverback, mothers, and playful juveniles interact naturally. You spend one hour with the family. The experience carries strong emotion due to the calm nature of the gorillas and the misty forest setting.

You return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you may relax or explore the nearby community.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You leave Rwanda and cross into Uganda through the Cyanika or Katuna border. The crossing is smooth and scenic. Uganda opens with rolling hills, banana plantations, and forested ridges.

As you approach Bwindi, the landscape becomes thicker and darker. Mist hangs over the treetops, creating a deep rainforest mood. You check in at your lodge in either Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija, or Buhoma depending on your trekking sector. The evening stays relaxed.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

You head to the briefing point early in the morning. Rangers explain gorilla behaviour and trekking rules. The trek begins on village edges and enters the dense rainforest. Bwindi’s terrain includes steep slopes, vines, moss-covered trees, and narrow forest trails.

Rangers guide you to the gorilla family. The encounter feels different from Rwanda because Bwindi is thicker and steeper. The silverback often sits in deep vegetation while juveniles play or climb nearby. You spend one hour with the family. The moment feels raw and emotional due to the wild nature of the forest.

You return to the lodge for lunch and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 6: Bwindi to Kigali

You enjoy a relaxed breakfast. You then begin the drive back to Kigali through the same scenic border route. The journey passes terraced hills, mountain views, and rural communities. The safari ends on arrival in Kigali.
