Detailed Itinerary: 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla & Cultural Tour
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.
Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your guide meets you in Kigali. You explore key sites such as museums, memorials, markets, or craft centres depending on time. Kigali offers a calm and clean city atmosphere that introduces you to Rwanda’s culture and history.
You later drive north through rolling hills and terraced landscapes. The countryside becomes greener as you approach Musanze. You check in at your lodge and relax for the evening.
Mid-range lodges:
Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge
Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
You arrive at the park headquarters for briefing. Rangers explain trekking rules and assign gorilla families. The walk begins on gentle farmland and enters dense forest where bamboo and tall trees create shade and cool air.
You meet the gorillas when the team guides you to the family. You observe their behaviour and interactions for one hour. The silverback leads the group while the young ones play and feed. The encounter feels emotional and unforgettable.
You return to the lodge for lunch and rest for the afternoon.
Day 3: Cultural Experience and Drive Back to Kigali
You visit a local cultural village near Volcanoes National Park. Community members share dance, music, farming traditions, herbal medicine, and stories about traditional life. The experience gives you a personal understanding of Rwanda’s heritage.
After the visit, you drive back to Kigali. The tour ends in the afternoon or early evening depending on your schedule.
