Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Uganda Gorilla & Chimps Safari From Kigali

Pre-Departure & Travel Advice

Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your guide meets you in Kigali. You drive north through Rwanda’s hills and cross into Uganda via Cyanika or Katuna. The border route is smooth and quick. Uganda opens with rolling farmland, terraced slopes, and distant forested ridges.

You continue to Bwindi’s southern or northern sector depending on the trekking permit. Mist rises from the dense canopy as you approach the national park. The forest feels deep, cool, and untouched. You check in at your lodge and enjoy the quiet atmosphere. You may take a short village walk or relax for the rest of the day.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

You reach the park headquarters for briefing. Rangers explain gorilla behaviour and trekking rules. The trek starts on cultivated edges and quickly enters the forest. Bwindi’s terrain includes steep hills, vines, thick undergrowth, and narrow natural trails. The air feels humid and cool.

Rangers track the gorilla family and lead you in. You observe the silverback as he monitors the group. Mothers feed calmly while juveniles climb or play. Every movement feels expressive and gentle. You spend one hour with the gorillas. The experience stays emotional and unforgettable.

You return to the lodge for lunch. The afternoon stays open for rest, cultural visits, or a forest walk.

Day 3: Bwindi to Kibale Forest National Park

You begin the long but scenic drive toward Kibale. The route passes rolling countryside, crater lakes, and banana plantations. You may stop for photos or local interactions along the way. As you approach Kibale, the landscape becomes greener and wetter. You check in at your lodge near the forest and relax for the evening.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest

You arrive at the visitor centre for briefing. Rangers explain chimpanzee behaviour and how tracking works. The trek enters a rainforest filled with tall trees, butterflies, and bird calls. Kibale is known for its high chimp population, so sightings feel reliable.

You find the chimps when rangers locate the group. They move fast, call loudly, and interact with energy. You observe them for one hour as they groom, feed, climb, and communicate. The atmosphere feels lively and wild.

In the afternoon, you may visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a nature walk. The wetland holds monkeys, birds, and a calm community setting.

Day 5: Kibale to Kigali

You enjoy a relaxed breakfast. You then begin the drive back to Rwanda through the same scenic countryside. The return journey includes crater lakes, plantations, and village landscapes. You cross the border and continue to Kigali. The safari ends on arrival.
