Detailed Itinerary: 6 Days Rwanda Primates Safari
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Your guide meets you in Kigali. You take a short city tour depending on your arrival time. Kigali offers museums, craft markets, cultural centres, and peaceful streets that give you a calm introduction to Rwanda. You settle at your hotel and prepare for the safari ahead.
Day 2: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park
You leave Kigali after breakfast and begin the drive southwest. The road leads through rolling hills and farming communities. Tea plantations stretch across the slopes and create a bright green scenery that defines this region.
As you approach Nyungwe, the landscape thickens into deep rainforest. The air cools, the forest appears layered with mist, and birds call from the canopy. You check in at your lodge and enjoy the quiet environment.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest
You start early because chimpanzees move quickly at dawn. Rangers brief you before entering the forest. The trek leads through tall trees, tangled vines, and damp forest paths. The air feels fresh and earthy.
You hear the chimps before you see them. Their calls echo across the valley. The group may move fast, so the trek can feel active and exciting. You observe them for one hour as they feed, groom, chase each other, and move through the trees. The moment feels raw and energetic.
You return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you may relax or take an optional nature walk.
Day 4: Colobus Monkey Trek and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
You return to the forest for a colobus monkey trek. These monkeys live in large groups and move calmly through the trees. Their black-and-white coats create a striking contrast against the green forest. The trek feels easier compared to chimpanzee tracking because the monkeys stay predictable and often feed in groups.
After the visit, you begin your journey north. The drive follows scenic landscapes and passes Lake Kivu before reaching the high volcanic region. You arrive in Musanze and check in at your lodge for the night.
Mid-range lodge options (no links):
Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge
Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
You reach the park headquarters early in the morning. Rangers brief you and assign gorilla families. The trek starts in farmland and then enters bamboo forest. The air cools quickly as you climb higher.
You find the gorillas when rangers guide you to the group. The silverback sits near his family and watches calmly. Mothers feed while the young ones climb, play, and explore. You spend one hour observing them. The moment feels emotional and peaceful. The behaviour of gorillas creates a strong connection and stays with you long after the trek.
You return to your lodge for lunch and enjoy a relaxed afternoon.
Day 6: Return to Kigali
You enjoy a slow morning. After breakfast, you drive back to Kigali. The route passes terraced hills and small villages. You may stop for crafts or viewpoints depending on your schedule. The safari ends in the afternoon.
