Pre-Departure & Travel Advice

Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your guide meets you in Kigali in the morning. You begin the drive north through Rwanda’s rolling hills and green countryside. You reach the border at Cyanika or Katuna depending on your assigned trekking sector. The crossing is quick, and Uganda’s landscape opens with terraced slopes and distant forested ridges.

As you approach Bwindi, the forest becomes thicker and darker. Mist hangs over the canopy, creating a deep rainforest atmosphere. You check in at your lodge in Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija, or Buhoma depending on your trek location.

After settling in, you relax with views of the forest. You may take a short community walk, visit local craft groups, or explore the village at your own pace. The evening stays calm.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

You arrive at the park headquarters for briefing. Rangers explain gorilla behaviour and trekking guidelines. You begin the trek on village paths and move into the thick rainforest. Bwindi’s terrain includes steep slopes, dense vines, moss-covered trees, and narrow natural trails. The air feels cool and humid.

Rangers track the gorilla family and guide you to their location. You spend one hour observing their natural life. The silverback guards his group while mothers feed and juveniles climb or play. Each moment feels intimate because the forest is quiet and enclosed. Gorilla encounters in Bwindi carry strong emotional weight due to the deep rainforest setting.

After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch. The afternoon is free for rest or optional activities such as cultural visits, village walks, or nature trails.

Day 3: Return to Kigali

You enjoy a relaxed morning and breakfast at the lodge. You later begin the drive back to Kigali through the same scenic border route. The road offers views of terraced farms, volcanic hills, and rural communities. The safari ends on arrival in Kigali in the afternoon or evening.
