Detailed Itinerary: 5 Days Rwanda Gorilla & Chimp Safari
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Your guide meets you at your hotel or airport. You take a calm city tour depending on your arrival time. Kigali offers clean streets, gentle hills, and important cultural sites that introduce you to Rwanda’s past and present. You may visit museums, craft centres, or markets to understand daily life in the capital. You return to your hotel for dinner and rest.
Day 2: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park
You leave Kigali after breakfast and begin the scenic drive to Nyungwe. The road leads through rolling hills, tea estates, and villages where local life unfolds at a slow pace. Rwanda’s western region becomes greener as tea fields stretch across the slopes. The air cools as you approach the forest.
Nyungwe rises as a massive block of ancient rainforest. The mood feels quiet and refreshing. You check in at your lodge and enjoy views of mist drifting through the treetops. The evening stays calm so you can prepare for the early start the next morning.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe
You depart very early because chimpanzees move fast at dawn. Rangers brief you about chimp behaviour and safety before entering the forest. The trek begins on well-marked trails but soon moves into deeper sections of rainforest. The ground stays damp, and the canopy blocks most sunlight, creating a cool and earthy scent.
You hear the chimps long before you see them. Their calls echo through the trees as they communicate across the group. Rangers guide you quickly to their location. You watch them feed, groom, rest, and swing through the branches. The encounter feels lively and unpredictable because chimps move often and change direction without warning.
You spend one full hour with them. After the experience, you return to the lodge for lunch. You may choose an optional walk in the afternoon, such as the canopy walkway, nature trails, or a visit to a tea plantation. You end the day with dinner at your lodge.
Day 4: Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park
You depart Nyungwe and begin the long but scenic drive north. The road follows Lake Kivu’s shoreline for part of the journey. The lake’s calm blue waters contrast beautifully with the steep hills around it. Small villages and fishing communities dot the route, giving the drive a cultural feel.
You continue toward Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The volcanic peaks appear as you approach the region. You check in at your lodge and enjoy the cool mountain air. The evening allows time for rest and preparation for the next morning’s gorilla trek.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park and Return to Kigali
You reach the park headquarters early in the morning. Rangers brief you on gorilla behaviour and trekking expectations. The trek begins in farmlands where villagers cultivate small fields on the lower slopes. You enter bamboo forest where the air cools and the forest thickens. The trails climb gently until you reach mossy trees and dense undergrowth.
Rangers locate the gorilla family and guide you in quietly. The silverback often sits in a central position, watching over his group. Mothers feed while youngsters play with branches, roll in the grass, or climb small trees. The atmosphere feels peaceful and intimate. You observe the family for one full hour. The encounter stays emotional because gorillas show gentle and expressive behaviour.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for a warm meal. You later drive back to Kigali through the highlands. The safari ends in the evening depending on your trekking duration.
