Overview: 5 Days DR Congo Gorilla & Volcano Safari (Goma to Virunga National Park)

The 5 Days DR Congo Gorilla & Volcano Safari is a condensed yet high-intensity expedition through Virunga National Park, designed for travellers seeking to experience the park’s two most iconic natural phenomena within a limited timeframe. Beginning in Goma, the safari combines mountain gorilla trekking in the forested slopes of the Virunga Massif with the dramatic ascent of Mount Nyiragongo—one of the world’s most active stratovolcanoes, famed for its vast, continuously boiling lava lake. Despite its shorter duration, the itinerary is structured to preserve acclimatisation time, trekking quality, and conservation immersion while minimising transit fatigue.

Virunga’s ecosystem forms part of the Albertine Rift biodiversity hotspot, where bamboo forest, montane jungle, lava plains, and volcanic ridgelines converge. This ecological diversity supports not only endangered mountain gorillas but also golden monkeys, forest elephants, and rare bird species. Accommodation is based within Virunga’s conservation lodges and trekking camps, positioned strategically to provide rapid access to gorilla sectors and volcano trailheads while maintaining environmental sensitivity.

Pre-Departure & Travel Advice

Travelers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) via Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, or Emirates, usually transiting through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Kigali. The full travel time averages 8–12 hours depending on layovers. It is highly recommended to arrive in Entebbe a day before the safari officially starts to rest and adjust after your international flight.

Adventure in the Wild Safaris offers airport pick-up, pre-tour hotel bookings, and assistance with domestic flight connections to ensure a smooth transition from Cape Town to Uganda.

Day 1 – Arrival in Goma, DR Congo

Arrival is via Goma International Airport or through the Gisenyi border crossing from Rwanda. After immigration clearance, security briefing, and permit verification, guests transfer to a lakeside lodge overlooking Lake Kivu and Mount Nyiragongo. The evening includes a comprehensive safari orientation covering gorilla trekking protocols, volcano hike logistics, safety measures, and conservation frameworks governing Virunga National Park.

Day 2 – Transfer to Virunga & Mountain Gorilla Trekking

An early transfer leads to Virunga National Park headquarters for ranger briefing and gorilla allocation. Guests then proceed directly to the trekking trailhead, maximising time efficiency within the short itinerary. Guided by trackers and armed rangers, the trek navigates bamboo forest and volcanic foothills in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once located, one hour is spent observing feeding, grooming, and social interactions under the leadership of the dominant silverback.

Day 3 – Mount Nyiragongo Volcano Trek Begins

Following breakfast, guests transfer to the Nyiragongo trailhead. The ascent takes approximately 5–7 hours through rainforest, lava rock fields, and high-altitude vegetation zones. Summit arrival offers sweeping views across the Virunga volcano chain. After nightfall, the glowing lava lake becomes visible within the crater—an extraordinary geological spectacle rarely matched worldwide.
