Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days Uganda Gorilla & Golden Monkeys Safari
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travelers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) via Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, or Emirates, usually transiting through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Kigali. The full travel time averages 8–12 hours depending on layovers. It is highly recommended to arrive in Entebbe a day before the safari officially starts to rest and adjust after your international flight.
Adventure in the Wild Safaris offers airport pick-up, pre-tour hotel bookings, and assistance with domestic flight connections to ensure a smooth transition from Cape Town to Uganda.
Day 1: Transfer from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Entebbe or Kampala, heading southwest toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive crosses rolling farmlands, papyrus wetlands, and the scenic highlands of Ankole, offering regular stops for photography and refreshments.
A lunch stop is made en route before continuing toward the dense rainforest that shelters nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. As you approach Bwindi, the terrain becomes steeper and more dramatic, setting the tone for the adventure ahead. Arrival at your lodge is in the late afternoon, allowing time to relax, enjoy forest views, and attend a gorilla trekking briefing.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a detailed briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You are assigned a gorilla family based on fitness level and trekking conditions before entering the forest with professional guides.
The gorilla trek can last between two and six hours, depending on the movement of the gorilla group. The forest is thick, humid, and alive with birdlife, butterflies, and ancient trees. When the gorillas are found, you spend one unforgettable hour observing them at close range as they feed, groom, and interact naturally.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch and well-earned rest. The afternoon is free for relaxation, forest walks, or community visits, depending on your energy levels.
Day 3: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
This morning, you depart Bwindi and travel south toward Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s smallest but most dramatic park, set within the Virunga Volcanoes. The drive is relatively short but highly scenic, passing through terraced hills, volcanic plains, and rural communities.
After arrival, you check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch with views of the volcanic peaks. The afternoon is relaxed to allow recovery from the gorilla trek. Optional activities include nature walks, cultural encounters with nearby communities, or simply enjoying the mountain atmosphere.
Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking & Return to Entebbe
After breakfast, you head to Mgahinga park headquarters for a briefing before starting golden monkey tracking. These rare and playful primates live in the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes. The trek is generally shorter and less demanding than gorilla trekking, making it a perfect complement to the safari.
Once located, you spend time observing the golden monkeys as they leap through bamboo stems and forage on the forest floor. Their energy and social behavior create a lively and photogenic experience.
After the trek, you begin the return journey to Entebbe. Depending on preference, this can be done by road or combined with a domestic flight from Kisoro or Kihihi. Arrival in Entebbe is later in the evening, marking the end of the safari.
