Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your guide meets you in Kigali. You take a brief city tour if time allows. You may visit museums, markets, or cultural centres. Kigali introduces you to Rwanda’s history and warm atmosphere.
You drive north toward Musanze. The road passes rolling hills and terraced farms. You reach your lodge near Volcanoes National Park and rest for the evening.
Mid-range lodges:
Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge
Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
You arrive at the park headquarters for briefing. Rangers explain trekking rules and assign gorilla families. The trek begins in open farmland and continues into thick bamboo forest. The air cools as you move deeper into the park.
You meet the gorillas when rangers guide you to the group. The silverback leads with calm strength. Juveniles play, mothers feed, and the forest stays quiet around them. You spend one hour with the family. The experience feels emotional and unforgettable.
You return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking
You return to the park headquarters for another briefing. Golden monkeys live in bamboo forests, so the trek feels lighter and faster. The monkeys move quickly and stay playful, often jumping through branches or feeding in small groups.
You spend one hour watching them. The experience feels lively and bright compared to the calm nature of gorilla trekking. After the visit, you return to the lodge and enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
Day 4: Return to Kigali
You enjoy a relaxed breakfast and later drive back to Kigali. You may stop at viewpoints or craft shops along the way. The tour ends in the afternoon.
