Detailed Itinerary: 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your guide meets you in Kigali. You take a short city tour if time allows. You may visit cultural sites, museums, or markets. Kigali offers a calm and clean atmosphere that introduces you to the country.
You drive north toward Musanze. The road passes rolling hills, terraced farms, and quiet villages. The volcanic chain appears as you approach the park. You check in at your lodge and rest for the night.
Mid-range lodges:
Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge
Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
You reach the park headquarters early for briefing. Rangers explain trekking guidelines and assign gorilla families. The trek begins on gentle farmland before entering the dense forest. The air cools, the bamboo thickens, and the terrain becomes more natural.
You meet the gorillas when the rangers guide you to the family. The silverback watches quietly while mothers feed and juveniles play. You spend one hour observing their natural behaviour. The experience feels emotional, raw, and unforgettable.
You return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure.
Day 3: Return to Kigali
You enjoy a relaxed morning at the lodge. You then drive back to Kigali through the scenic countryside. You may stop at craft shops or viewpoints if time allows. The safari ends in the afternoon.
