Overview: 12 Days DR Congo In-Depth Gorilla & Primate Safari (Goma to Multiple Parks)

This 12-day in-depth DR Congo gorilla and primate safari is designed for primate enthusiasts and conservation-focused travellers seeking the most immersive ape tracking experience in Central Africa. Beginning in Goma, the journey traverses the ecologically rich eastern Congo circuit, linking Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park—two of the continent’s most biologically significant primate strongholds. The expedition combines mountain gorilla trekking in the Virunga volcanic ranges with eastern lowland gorilla tracking in the dense lowland rainforests of Kahuzi-Biega, offering the rare opportunity to observe two distinct gorilla subspecies within a single itinerary.

Beyond gorillas, the safari incorporates chimpanzee tracking, golden monkey encounters, forest biodiversity walks, and community interactions that contextualise conservation within local livelihoods. Transfers include a mix of overland scenic drives, Lake Kivu crossings, and charter or scheduled domestic flights where necessary, ensuring both logistical efficiency and experiential diversity. Accommodation ranges from well-established eco-lodges to research-proximate forest camps, strategically positioned to minimise trekking transfer times while maximising immersion in Congo’s equatorial wilderness.

Detailed Itinerary: 12 Days DR Congo In-Depth Gorilla & Primate Safari (Goma to Multiple Parks)

Pre-Departure & Travel Advice

Travelers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) via Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, or Emirates, usually transiting through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Kigali. The full travel time averages 8–12 hours depending on layovers. It is highly recommended to arrive in Entebbe a day before the safari officially starts to rest and adjust after your international flight.

Adventure in the Wild Safaris offers airport pick-up, pre-tour hotel bookings, and assistance with domestic flight connections to ensure a smooth transition from Cape Town to Uganda.

Day 1 – Arrival in Goma, DR Congo

Arrival is scheduled at Goma International Airport or via the Gisenyi (Rwanda) land border crossing. After immigration formalities and security briefings, guests transfer to their lodge overlooking Lake Kivu and the Nyiragongo volcanic massif. The evening includes a safari orientation covering trekking protocols, permit regulations, and conservation frameworks governing Virunga National Park.

Accommodation: Lake Kivu Hotel / Hotel Ihusi / Cap Kivu Hotel

Day 2 – Transfer to Virunga National Park Headquarters

Following breakfast, guests proceed to the Virunga National Park briefing centre. Ranger guides deliver an in-depth orientation on mountain gorilla behaviour, trekking safety, and ecological etiquette. The afternoon includes a nature walk or community visit around the park periphery, introducing travellers to conservation outreach programmes and local cultural dynamics.

Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp

Day 3 – Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

The first major primate encounter begins with an early ranger-led trek into the Virunga montane forests. Hiking through bamboo zones, volcanic slopes, and mist-covered vegetation, guests track a habituated mountain gorilla family. Once located, a strictly regulated one-hour observation period allows close-range viewing of silverbacks, females, and juveniles. Photography and behavioural interpretation are guided by rangers. Return to the lodge for relaxation and trek debriefing.

Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp

Day 4 – Second Gorilla Trek or Nyiragongo Volcano Option

This day is flexible depending on traveller interest and permit allocation. Guests may undertake a second mountain gorilla trek for extended observation or opt to hike Mount Nyiragongo, famous for hosting one of the world’s largest active lava lakes. The volcano trek is physically demanding but geologically extraordinary, adding volcanic adventure to the primate itinerary.

Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp / Nyiragongo Summit Shelters (if hiking)

Day 5 – Golden Monkey Tracking & Forest Exploration

Guests track the endangered golden monkeys inhabiting the Virunga bamboo forests. These agile primates offer fast-paced photographic opportunities distinct from gorilla encounters. The afternoon includes birding walks and visits to reforestation or anti-poaching initiatives operated by park authorities.

Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp

Day 6 – Transfer from Goma to Bukavu (Lake Kivu Crossing)

The safari transitions southward via a scenic Lake Kivu boat transfer or overland drive along the lakeshore. This journey reveals terraced hillsides, fishing villages, and volcanic landscapes. Arrival in Bukavu marks the gateway to Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Evening at leisure with views over the lake.

Accommodation: Orchid Safari Club / Hotel Begonias / Panorama Hotel Bukavu

Day 7 – Transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park

After breakfast, guests drive to Kahuzi-Biega, a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting eastern lowland gorillas. Park briefings outline the ecological differences between lowland and mountain gorillas, including group dynamics, habitat range, and physical morphology. Afternoon forest acclimatisation walk.

Accommodation: Orchids Safari Club (Forest Wing) / Coco Lodge Bukavu / L’Orchids Lodge

Day 8 – Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking

This trek explores dense lowland rainforest, markedly different from Virunga’s montane terrain. Eastern lowland gorillas—the largest gorilla subspecies—are tracked through swampy valleys and towering primary forest. The encounter provides comparative behavioural insights versus mountain gorillas, enriching the primate study dimension of the safari.

Accommodation: Orchids Safari Club / Coco Lodge Bukavu

Day 9 – Second Lowland Gorilla Trek or Forest Biodiversity Walk

A second trek allows deeper observation, photography refinement, and increased sighting probability of varied group interactions. Alternatively, guests may opt for guided biodiversity walks focusing on endemic birdlife, forest elephants, and primate species such as colobus and guenons.

Accommodation: Orchids Safari Club / Coco Lodge Bukavu

Day 10 – Chimpanzee Tracking Experience

Guests track habituated chimpanzees within Kahuzi-Biega’s forest corridors. Chimpanzee encounters are dynamic, often involving vocal communication, tool use, and territorial displays. Rangers interpret social hierarchies and feeding ecology, expanding the safari’s primate diversity beyond gorillas.

Accommodation: Orchids Safari Club / Hotel Begonias / Panorama Hotel Bukavu

Day 11 – Cultural & Conservation Immersion

This day focuses on human-wildlife coexistence. Activities include visits to local communities, conservation education centres, and women-led cooperative projects supported by park tourism revenue. Guests gain perspective on how gorilla tourism directly sustains livelihoods and reduces poaching pressure. Farewell dinner overlooking Lake Kivu.

Accommodation: Orchid Safari Club / Lake Side Hotel Bukavu

Day 12 – Return to Goma & Departure

Guests transfer back to Goma via boat or road, depending on logistics. Final views of Lake Kivu and the Virunga volcano chain conclude the expedition. Departure flights or Rwanda border crossings are arranged according to onward travel plans.

Accommodation: Day Room – Lake Kivu Hotel / Hotel Ihusi (if required before departure)
