Overview: 10 Days DR Congo Virunga Gorilla & Volcano Adventure (Goma to Virunga & Nyiragongo)
This 10-day DR Congo Virunga Gorilla & Volcano Adventure is a concentrated primate and volcanic expedition crafted for travellers seeking an in-depth exploration of Virunga National Park’s biological and geological extremes. Beginning and ending in Goma, the itinerary focuses exclusively on the Virunga conservation landscape—home to endangered mountain gorillas, rare golden monkeys, active volcanoes, and one of Africa’s most complex montane ecosystems. The journey combines multiple gorilla trekking opportunities with the iconic Mount Nyiragongo lava lake hike, creating a dual-experience safari that merges wildlife tracking with high-altitude volcanic adventure.
Virunga’s terrain is defined by mist-shrouded bamboo forests, lava plains, afro-montane vegetation, and dramatic volcanic backdrops forming part of the Albertine Rift. This safari is structured to allow acclimatisation, maximise gorilla viewing probability, and provide flexibility for additional treks, forest walks, and conservation immersion. Accommodation is based in Virunga’s exclusive eco-lodges and tented camps, positioned within or on the edge of gorilla sectors to reduce daily transfer times and heighten wilderness immersion.

Detailed Itinerary: 10 Days DR Congo Virunga Gorilla & Volcano Adventure (Goma to Virunga & Nyiragongo)
Pre-Departure & Travel Advice
Travelers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Entebbe International Airport (EBB) via Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, or Emirates, usually transiting through Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Kigali. The full travel time averages 8–12 hours depending on layovers. It is highly recommended to arrive in Entebbe a day before the safari officially starts to rest and adjust after your international flight.
Adventure in the Wild Safaris offers airport pick-up, pre-tour hotel bookings, and assistance with domestic flight connections to ensure a smooth transition from Cape Town to Uganda.
Day 1 – Arrival in Goma, DR Congo
Arrival takes place at Goma International Airport or via the Gisenyi border crossing from Rwanda. After visa processing and security clearance, guests transfer to a lakeside lodge overlooking Lake Kivu and the Nyiragongo volcano. The evening includes a full expedition briefing covering gorilla trekking regulations, volcano hike logistics, safety protocols, and park conservation frameworks.
Accommodation: Lake Kivu Hotel / Hotel Ihusi / Cap Kivu Hotel
Day 2 – Transfer to Virunga National Park
Following breakfast, guests transfer to Virunga National Park headquarters for registration and ranger orientation. En route, views of lava fields from past eruptions and rural highland settlements provide geological context to the region. After check-in at the lodge, guests enjoy a guided forest acclimatisation walk or community interaction near the park boundary.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 3 – First Mountain Gorilla Trek
An early morning transfer leads to the gorilla trekking trailhead. Accompanied by trackers and armed rangers, guests hike through dense bamboo forests and volcanic foothills in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once located, one hour is spent observing feeding, grooming, and social interactions led by the dominant silverback. Return to camp for relaxation and photography review.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 4 – Second Gorilla Trekking Experience
A second trek provides extended behavioural observation and photographic opportunities, allowing guests to experience different gorilla family dynamics or terrain sectors. Repeat trekking significantly increases viewing depth, particularly valuable for wildlife photographers and primate specialists.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 5 – Golden Monkey Tracking & Forest Walk
Guests track endangered golden monkeys within Virunga’s bamboo zone. Their speed and arboreal agility create a lively contrast to gorilla encounters. The afternoon includes birding excursions, orchid identification, and interpretation of Virunga’s high-altitude flora.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 6 – Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage & Conservation Engagement
This day focuses on conservation immersion. Guests visit the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage—the only facility in the world caring for orphaned mountain gorillas. Ranger presentations outline anti-poaching operations, veterinary care, and community partnerships sustaining Virunga’s conservation model. Afternoon leisure at the lodge.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 7 – Mount Nyiragongo Volcano Trek Begins
After an early breakfast, guests transfer to the Nyiragongo trailhead. The ascent takes approximately 5–7 hours, traversing rainforest, lava rock, and high-altitude vegetation zones. Summit arrival reveals the world’s largest active lava lake, glowing within the crater after dusk—an extraordinary geological spectacle.
Accommodation: Nyiragongo Summit Shelters
Day 8 – Descend Nyiragongo & Return to Virunga
Sunrise views over the lava lake precede descent back to the base. Guests transfer to their Virunga lodge for rest, massage services (where available), and trek recovery.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 9 – Optional Third Gorilla Trek or Nature Exploration
This flexible day allows for a third gorilla trek, forest elephant tracking, birdwatching, or guided lava-plain walks. It provides contingency for missed sightings or travellers wanting maximum gorilla exposure.
Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge / Bukima Tented Camp
Day 10 – Return to Goma & Departure
Guests transfer back to Goma with final views of the Virunga volcano chain and Lake Kivu. Day rooms may be arranged prior to departure flights or Rwanda border crossings, concluding the 10-day primate and volcano expedition.
Accommodation: Day Room – Lake Kivu Hotel / Hotel Ihusi (if required)
