Detailed Itinerary: 1 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek Safari

Pre-Departure & Travel Advice

Travellers departing from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) can connect to Kigali International Airport (KGL) via RwandAir, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, or Emirates, with common layovers in Kigali, Addis Ababa, or Nairobi. The full journey typically takes 9–13 hours, depending on the transit time. Arriving in Kigali a day before the safari begins is strongly advised so you can rest, recover from the long flight, and enjoy a gentle introduction to Rwanda before crossing into Uganda.

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be met by your safari guide for a seamless airport pick-up. Support with pre-tour hotel arrangements and any onward road or flight connections toward Bwindi or Mgahinga will be provided to ensure a smooth transition from your international flight into your gorilla trekking adventure.

Early Morning Departure from Kigali

Your journey begins before dawn, with a pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport at around 4:30 AM. The two-and-a-half-hour drive to Volcanoes National Park is a scenic introduction to Rwanda’s famous hills, as the city lights fade into rolling green landscapes and misty valleys. Along the way, you may catch glimpses of rural life — farmers tending to terraced fields, children walking to school, and the first rays of sunlight breaking over the Virunga volcanoes. As you arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi, the anticipation builds. The air is crisp, and the sight of the forested slopes ahead signals the adventure waiting to unfold.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After a briefing by park rangers, you’ll be assigned to a gorilla family and guided by experienced trackers into the forest. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas, but the reward at the end is beyond words. The forest is alive with sounds — birdsong, rustling leaves, and the soft drizzle that often lingers in the highlands. When you finally find the gorillas, the moment feels surreal. You’ll spend one full hour with them, observing their daily routines: mothers nursing their young, juveniles playing in the undergrowth, and the silverback watching over his family with quiet strength. Every gesture and glance reveals a deep sense of connection — a reminder of how close we are to these magnificent creatures.

The Return Journey to Kigali

After your trek, return to the park headquarters for your trekking certificate and a chance to relax. Lunch is provided in Musanze, where you can reflect on the incredible experience while overlooking the surrounding hills. In the afternoon, you’ll drive back to Kigali, arriving in the early evening. Depending on your schedule, you may stop for a brief city tour — visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, or coffee shops before being dropped off at your hotel or the airport.
